• Examine the leg veins with patient standing
• Examine skin of leg
  • Varicosities
  • Eczema
  • Ulcers
  • Discolouration
  • Temperature
• Elevate leg in the supine position
  • Empty veins
  • Apply tourniquet below sapheno-femeral junction
• Ask patient to stand
  • Assess level of incompetence
• Summary and analysis of findings
